The year was 1969 and Omega introduced the Speedmaster Mark II - a watch with strong foundations from the outgoing Speedmaster.

A little history first - On March 1st 1965, OMEGA's Speedmaster chronograph was "flight-qualified by NASA for all manned space missions. It was the only wristwatch to have withstood all of the U.S. space agency's severe tests under conditions of zero gravity and magnetic fields, extreme shocks, vibrations and temperatures ranging from -18 to +93 degrees Celsius.

In the same month, the Speedmaster was worn on board the Gemini 3 mission. It was the first “official” trip for the rugged chronograph but it had already flown in space twice during Project Mercury.

The new 2014 Omega Speedmaster Mark II pays homage to the original design. The watch will be issued in two versions:  a traditional Speedy black dial, and the grey dial with white markers & fluorescent orange accents.

Details are limited at this time, but likely to feature:
- 42 & 44mm wide case, water resistant to 100 meters
- Automatic mechanical movement & luminous tach scale, a first in the Speedmaster family

To be officially unveiled at Baselworld 2014 on March 27. Price for the Omega Speedmaster Mark II watches will be $6,250.
